“
Noble life demands a noble architecture for noble uses of noble men.
Lack of culture means what it has always meant: ignoble civilization
and therefore imminent downfall. “—Frank Lloyd Wright
For many centuries, skilled artisans, working on site have crafted
functional and decorative ceiling medallions to dress and glorify
what would otherwise be a featureless ceiling.
Born in Ancient Greece and copied through the ages, hand-crafted
ceiling medallions of wood or plaster have adorned the ceilings
of great halls in stately buildings, and the personal rooms of
private residences, often serving as a rosette or foil for a grand
chandelier.
Having peaked in popularity in 19th Century America, the ceiling
medallion is now seeing a widespread resurgence in both restorations
and new construction. With the advent of new materials and fabrication
methods, ornate medallions that are round, square, oval, rectangular,
octagonal, and hexagonal are being fashioned from foam cores of
urethane and finished in easy to paint vinyl, making them undistinguishable
from their bas-relief ancestors.
Today’s chaste Greek-inspired medallions, and elaborate
Baroque medallions have all the flourish and detail of their forbearers,
yet, are lightweight, cost effective, and easy to install.
For dressing up a ceiling in an easy and affordable way, Architectural
Depot’s one and two-piece urethane ceiling medallions are
the smart and stylish way to bring luxurious appointments to any
room.
Available in sizes that range from several inches to a few feet
in diameter, with either solid centers or center holes to accommodate
fixtures, Architectural Depot’s ceiling medallions evoke
the styles, of Jefferson, Lennox, Orleans, Bridgeport, Chelsea,
and Florentine Design.
