| Early columns from
Roman times were part of architecture to ensure solid building
design. In the past since trees are round, non-tapered round
columns were the most common item for a building. Today's columns
can offer both decorative and functional design.
Round columns are the typical favorite for buildings. In
the past, non-tapered round columns were typically used for
front porches to provide support and make an entrance welcoming.
But not anymore. Now they are used to define room endings
and beginnings or as pure classical decoration like adding
trim to the walls. Columns offer the convenience of separating
space within a home and still providing an open, smooth floor
plan. Non-tapered round columns can fit with any décor.
A classical look is what non-tapered columns will provide
for the home. Old southern mansions often embody this look
and are highly valued by many. And the fine historical buildings
found in our nation's capital all reflect this same strength
and charm.
Non-tapered round columns can be created with a variety
of materials that include wood, stone, concrete and fiberglass
(FRP). They may be finished with a smooth surface or include
flutes for an extra design element. Most are made to be painted
or can reflect a "faux finish" of the homeowner's
desire.
