| The designs of most
columns today are derived from ancient Greek and Roman columns.
What are Roman columns like?
Ancient Romans took the designs of ancient Greek columns
and gave these designs their own twist. Greek Doric columns
were simple in design. These Doric columns had fluting on
their shafts and simple capitals. Doric Roman columns added
the very practical addition of a base.
Roman columns from the Tuscan order were sleek, streamlined,
and understated. These columns dropped the fluting on the
shafts and simplified the lines of Doric capitals even more.
These ancient columns actually have a very contemporary appearance.
Roman columns from the Composite order are very ornate.
These Roman columns combined the motifs of Greek Ionic and
Corinthian columns for a “new” decorative appearance.
The capitals of Composite Roman columns included stylized
acanthus leaves topped with stylized scrolls.
The designs of today’s Roman columns are derived from
these ancient columns. You can see Roman columns beautifying
many homes and buildings. Today, Roman columns are made not
only from wood or stone, Roman columns are made from modern
materials such as urethane, fiberglass, and composites.
If you are planning a building project, you might want to
consider including Roman columns in your plans.
