| Exterior columns on
a home may present a remodeling challenge, if you have an older
home that has columns in need of refurbishing. On the other
hand, columns can be used in a variety of ways to enhance a
newer home that is being remodeled.
Older homes in the Greek Revival Style often feature columns
as part of the exterior styling. Usually these columns are
made of wood, and are hollow rather than solid. Treating
the existing column for rot or other damage means inspecting
both inner and outer surfaces.
Exterior columns on Georgian style homes are also usually
made of wood, rising two stories. These columns support a
pediment which should also be inspected for deterioration.
The exterior columns on American Georgians are usually attached
to the house. The same is usually true of gothic inspired
architectural designs. While these homes feature elaborate
and complicated rooflines, the columns are largely ornamental.
• The exterior columns on old Greek Revival homes
are usually hollow wood, which can be treated or the column
replaced.
• Georgian homes will typically have exterior columns
supporting the pediment at the home’s entrance, but
in this country often those columns draw support from the
house structure itself.
• The columns found in gothic style homes built by
the eccentrics of past generations are largely ornamental
Modern remodeling jobs can add a lot to a house through
the addition of a porch. In the front of the house, if the
door is more or less at street level the porch can simply
consist of columns and the overhead covering. A simple covered
entryway supported by columns adds a little formality and
a lot of value to a home. If the addition is a back porch,
columns can support an overhead covering and anchor a fence-type
enclosure.
• Front porches can be added with a line of columns
interspersed across the front of the home.
• Formal entryways can be created with the addition
of exterior columns supporting a pediment.
• Back porches that need fencing can also be given
additional presence with columns providing the support at
the critical points.
